National Theatre
Key Details
Overview
The National Theatre is situated on the South Bank of the River Thames at a point called King's Reach.
Denys Lasdun, the architect of the National, noted that from this vantage point, it is possible to pick up a panorama of the City of London that stretches from St Paul's round to Somerset House and on to Hawksmoor's towers at Westminster Abbey.
The National Theatre, completed in 1976, quickly became a landmark in its own right, embedded in the nation's consciousness, which was shown recently in a poll when the building was voted among the nation's top ten most loved and most hated buildings.
