The apartments at Corio are built on the site of the old Grange tannery on Grange Walk: Leatherworking was one of the most important industries in Bermondsey in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Grange tannery was run by a company called Barrow, Hepburn and Gale. The firm exists to this day manufacturing, amongst other things, the famous red leather despatch boxes used by the Queen and her ministers.
